The Blickensderfer Typewriter was invented by George Canfield Blickensderfer (1850–1917) and patented on August 4, 1891. Blickensderfer was the nephew of the inventor of the stenotype John Celivergos Zachos. Two models were initially unveiled to the public at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the Model 1 and the Model 5. The Model 7, offered in 1897, became the deluxe version of the basic design. Both models evolved with time and were quite popular.

This unique design formed the basis of a typewriter manufacturing business that lasted almost thirty years.

When Blickensderfer unveiled its small Model 5 at the 1893 World's Fair, a lean version of its larger, more complex Model 1 typewriter, these revolutionary features drew huge crowds. The Remington Typewriter Company was then probably the largest and the world leader. George was a budding entrepreneur and could afford only a very small exhibit space to introduce his magnificent machine, the Blickensderfer Model 5, the first Blick. This was a typewriter with a keyboard but it used a type wheel ball instead of striker keys.
